Planning a Medical Trip to Korea: The Practical Guide

Choosing the procedure is the easy part. What derails medical trips is logistics — booking a flight home three days too early, arriving without the records the clinic needed, or discovering your card has a daily limit below the bill.

This is the practical layer, covering every specialty.

Entry: what US citizens need right now

• Visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism, business or family visits.
• K-ETA is currently waived for US passport holders through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 it becomes mandatory again for all visa-free travellers — so if you are reading this planning a 2027 trip, budget for it.
• The e-Arrival Card is required regardless and is completed online before you land. This one catches people out precisely because K-ETA is waived.
• Longer or complex treatment: Korea issues a dedicated medical-treatment visa for patients whose care exceeds a visa-free stay. The hospital provides the supporting documentation. Confirm the current category and requirements with the Korean consulate in your region — rules change.

Rules genuinely do change; verify on the official Korean immigration site close to departure rather than trusting any blog, this one included.

How many days each procedure actually needs

The single most common planning error is booking the return flight too early.

Add two buffer days to anything surgical. Swelling, a delayed lab, or a follow-up your surgeon wants to repeat are all normal, and a changeable ticket costs less than the alternative.

What to bring

• Medical records and imaging. Bring actual files — a CD or USB of prior CT, MRI, X-rays or CBCT, not just a report. Curo translates records in advance, which is what lets a clinic quote accurately before you fly.
• A written medication list with generic names and doses. Brand names differ in Korea.
• Your prescription medication in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription. Some medications routine in the US — certain ADHD stimulants and strong opioid painkillers in particular — are tightly controlled or prohibited in Korea. Check with the Korean embassy before travelling with anything controlled; the penalties are serious and ignorance is not a defence.
• Glasses and your current prescription if you are having eye surgery, plus a record of contact-lens wear.
• Loose, button-front clothing for anything facial or dental.

Where to stay

• Gangnam / Apgujeong — the densest cluster of dermatology, dental and aesthetic clinics. Convenient, expensive, and walkable to follow-ups.
• Jongno / Euljiro — near several large university hospitals, better value, good transit.
• Near the hospital, not near the sights. After a procedure you will make the trip to a follow-up several times and will not care about the view.

Paying

This trips people up more often than it should:

• Most clinics accept international credit cards, but check your card's daily and per-transaction limits and notify your bank of travel. A $6,000 dental bill can silently fail a fraud check.
• Deposits are common for surgical bookings.
• Wire transfer works for larger amounts but takes days — arrange it before you fly, not from the clinic lobby.
• Get the itemised quote in writing and confirm the currency. Ask whether card payment carries a surcharge.
• Keep every receipt. Some US HSA/FSA plans reimburse qualifying medical expenses abroad, and you will need documentation.

Insurance — read this part

• Standard travel insurance generally excludes elective procedures and anything arising from them. Assume it will not cover a complication from surgery you chose to have.
• Medical-complication insurance specific to treatment abroad exists and is worth pricing for surgical trips.
• Your US health insurance almost certainly will not pay for planned treatment in Korea. Some plans will cover follow-up care at home for a complication — check the wording before you go, not after.

Aftercare: the step people skip

Before you leave Korea:

1. Get your operative report, imaging and results in English.
2. Get the medication list you were discharged on, with generic names.
3. Get a named contact at the clinic and the escalation route, including out of hours.
4. Know who sees you in the US — a specific physician or dentist who has agreed in advance, not "my GP probably."

A trip without step four is not finished treatment; it is an unfinished episode of care.

In an emergency in Korea

• 119 — ambulance and fire, the Korean equivalent of 911.
• 1339 — medical information and emergency medical guidance, with English support.
• 1330 — Korea Travel Hotline, 24-hour interpretation in English and other languages. Save it.
• Major hospitals in Seoul have international healthcare centres with English-speaking coordinators.

When not to travel

Being direct, because it matters more than any of the above:

• You have symptoms now. Chest pain, a breast lump, blood in your stool, sudden vision change — see a doctor at home this week. Planned travel is for planned care.
• Your condition is unstable, or you are mid-treatment for something else.

• You cannot return. Implants and orthodontics need second visits. If a second trip is impossible, choose a different plan.
• You cannot take the recovery time. Flying too early after facial surgery is a real risk, not a rule to negotiate.
